The CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, recently stated the personal computer is becoming obsolete. Steve envisions a time coming in the near future that he states ‘the post-PC era’. Steve believes individuals will desire devices related to the iPad that replace the traditional desktop workstations and related computers and move towards more intuitive touch-based environments.

While Steve Jobs and Apple provided consumers with what they desired, for example the iPod, the iPhone, and now the iPad, others believe the increasing a continual demand will become a huge challenge. Sarah Epps, an analyst at Forrester, does not believe the iPad is a post-PC device. “The iPad is a very new type of personal computer. It brings in a new thought computing.”

Desktop PCs, laptops, and servers may have decreased during the most recent economic crisis but the most recent figures indicate sales in this area is bouncing back and demand is still strong. Until more business applications are developed for remote devices, personal computers will be the staple for enterprise IT departments. There are also applications built for personal computers that will be the personal preference for mobile business users. Security is another issue as many laptops contain features including onboard data encryption, fingerprint readers, and other hardware security functionality. To be safe remote mobile professionals will have to have access to virtual private networks in order to access their organization's infrastructure. There are very few devices to date that will support a security manager policy that organizations require as well as Windows personal computers. This extra security is required as cyber criminals ramp up their efforts exploiting mobile browsers and smart phones. There is still a considerable amount of computing workloads and gaming circumstances that depend on client software and hardware. Data intensive applications also require strong client base systems. Highly complex information analysis, 3-D imaging, and photo editing are some of the circumstances that will operate much better within a personal computer environment.

Personal computers also hold an advantage in being very familiar to users. From the invention of the typewriter to word processors to full-blown computers, consumers are already familiar with the computing keyboard, the what you see is what you get business model, and the overall interface does not require a huge learning curve.
